Tutti Frutti Summer Fun & Christmas in July Show-n-Tell - July 9, 2019

Wikipedia stuff: The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America, is a country comprising 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions. This weekend we celebrate our 243rd anniversary of the act Declaring Independence from British rule. The declaration is a well-known statement on human rights, particularly its second sentence:


“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”


In pursuit of happiness, I hope you have a wonderful Independence weekend. Continue the fun with the Cactus Patcher’s Tutti Frutti Summer Fun!

To cool off from the summer fun, bring Christmas / Winter quilts for show and tell, or your latest creation.

There are a few other items on the agenda: Pam will bring our raffle basket, we will discuss and vote on the 2019/2020 community service projects, Claire will talk about the Underwater Treasure Challenge, and don’t forget our door prize drawing.

Friendship Sewing is Tuesday, May 28, 2019!

Wind down from the Memorial Day Weekend by stitchin' with some friends. What a nice way to make some headway on a project!

We are working this month on our own projects, one of which could be our newest challenge!

Also, be thinking about ideas for friendship (charity) sewing for the 2019-2020 Cactus Patchers year. We can continue with aprons and pillows for mastectomy patients and/or move on to another project. We will be continuing with Quilts of Valor for those of you who are interested. Ideas will be discussed at the July program meeting.

Don't forget to bring a jacket or fan, whichever meets your comfort needs!

4th Tuesday - Oct 23, 2018

October 4th Tuesday is already upon us and wonder of wonders - it feels like Fall!!!  Cool temps may not last, but oh what a treat.

For those participating in the Black & White Row Exchange - the exchange will happen on Tuesday.

Marilyn from Bag & Boob Babes visited Cactus Patchers on the 9th and gave us several simple apron projects to sew for ladies who have had mastectomies.  If you'd like to sew them, there will be a few on hand Tuesday.  And...  Tall Nancy will have Days for Girls sewing to work on for those that would like to help on this project.

As days are getting shorter and the holidays and/or quilt show deadlines are getting closer, feel free to bring your own projects to work on.

Whatever you decide to work on, we can't wait to see you Tuesday from 3pm - 8:30pm (or any time therein).

Meeting TOMORROW - Tues, Oct 9, 2019 - Wanda Dix Trunk Show & Bag & Boob Babes

I hope you can join us on Tuesday to welcome Wanda Dix as she presents a Trunk Show of her personal quilts! You may know Wanda as she is a member of Cactus Patchers, but more importantly, she has run the Peace by Piece chapter of Arizona Blankets 4 Kids for over 13 years! Also, Marilyn from Bag & Boob Babes will share with us her Breast Cancer Awareness Project. The B&BB group provides drain aprons with pillows, chemo hats, eye masks and totes, and could use a helping hand.

Sew Day! August 28, 2019

On Tuesday, August 28, we can delight in knowing there are only four more days until September! Fall and Christmas decorations are hitting the stores in force, causing our internal quilt clocks to seriously evaluate what we can and cannot complete by a certain date.

If you’re working on the Black & White Row Challenge, that due date will be coming up before you know it!

Come sew with us from 3:00pm to 8:30pm (or any time therein).

If you’re in town, I hope you’re in the neighborhood and can at least come by to say howdy!

Bring a project of your own, or sew for the Days for Girls project. Tall Nancy will bring DfG items.

June 26, 2018 - Sew Day



There are two seasons in the Phoenix metropolitan area: warm and blast furnace.

Take a foray through the misery of the late June blast furnace on Tuesday, the 26th to sew with some friends at Pyle Center! It's always somewhat cooler inside!

We have the meeting space from 3:00pm to 8:30pm and you’re welcome to come for the entire time, or just a part of it. Some people even drop in only for a few minutes, and that’s okay, too!

One really good thing about staying until after sundown is that your vehicle is at least a little cooler when you are ready to leave. And the air conditioner seems to be happier. 

Bring a project of your own, or sew for the Days for Girls project. Tall Nancy will bring DfG items.

Meeting Tuesday, August 11, 2015 - Quillows

Pyle Center, Tempe Library Complex, 655 E. Southern Ave.

Guests welcome

Business meeting and Show & Tell followed by:
Learn about and work on this year's community service project, quillows for Banner Desert Cancer Center chemotherapy patients. Quillows are quilts with a built-in pocket -- the quilt folds up into the pocket to form a pillow. Add handles and it's easily carried. Our target size is 48x60.

Bring your sewing machine and cutting tools, or just enthusiasm and conversation. The Cactus Patchers fabric bins will be available to provide material for your quillow, and the chapter is also providing batting for these projects.

The end of summer is finally on the horizon and our regular 2nd and 4th Tuesday meetings will return next month, September 8 and 22.

Meeting Tues, Feb 24, 2015 - My Sister's Place

We're going to have a fun-filled evening working on our community service project to finish up our fulfillment to My Sister's Place.  We have machines lined up, as well as a mat, cutting supplies and an iron.  We'll be adding borders to existing tops and piecing backings to fit the tops.  The Block of the Month group will also be bringing their February block to share and meet to move forward on a schedule.

Bring your ideas and join the fun!  Doors open 6p at the Pyle Center, Sedona Room (subject to change)  in Tempe.

Meeting Tues, May 13, 2014 - Sunshine Acres Children's Home - Community Service

Important: We will meet a few minutes early (6:15pm) on Tuesday, May 13th, so that an abbreviated business meeting can take place, and then fun, fun, fun.

This Tuesday we are having a fun 'sewing factory' to make pillowcases for Sunshine Acres Children's Home and will need as many volunteers as possible to make it happen. This is a great opportunity to invite children, grandchildren, neighbors, friends to show them what we do and let them have some fun with us! We will have several stations set up so that we can assembly-line our project and make the most of our time together. The stations will be: sewing, ironing, cutting, prepping, color coordinating, folding, etc, so you can see we need everyone! Please read the list below and respond back only if you are able to provide the ADDITIONAL items.

Everyone please bring1. One (1) piece of fabric- 27" x wof (width of fabric)

                                      2. One (1) piece of fabric- 12" x wof

                                      (Note- these 2 do not have to match, and dont forget about solid colors)

                                      3. Any leftover seam binding you have that we can use as trim/piping

                                      4. Your own drink

We also need: 4-6 sewing machines (w/ neutral thread- tan, grey)

                       2 irons and ironing pads

                       2 cutting stations w/ mat, rotary cutter and long ruler

If you are able to bring any of these additional items, please respond back so that we can keep track (so we dont have 15 irons). If you have already given me fabric for this project or are unable to contribute, thanks and no need to bring. Our goal is to make 80-90 pillowcases so that each child gets one on Christmas morning. Though we may not finish all of them on May 13th, we can certainly put a dent in it, make up some cute kits to take home, and sew them this summer and/or at our upcoming Fall Retreat!!!

Community Service Sew-A-Thon 9/10/13

What a fun time we had sewing at our last meeting in our stuffed toy factory! We sewed, stuffed, and had some laughs while finishing 25 stuffed toys. We also had 2 visitors that stepped in & helped stuff. Thanks Diane & Carole! In addition, another 10 were turned in at the retreat in Prescott, which brings our grand total to 45!!! Way to go, Cactus Patchers!! Yes, we have more kits but it's only mid-September and we are sure to reach our goal by October 29th (5th Tuesday). Thanks so much for doing for others!

Community Service Sewing Bee July 30, 2013

Meeting Tuesday, August 13, 2013 - My Sister's Place

From Maryann:

This upcoming meeting is one that is near and dear to me, and should be for all of us: Domestic Violence. The recipient of this year's Community Service quilts is a domestic violence shelter called My Sister's Place and a representative will be coming to the Pyle Center to give us a program that we believe is very important. They will share what a victim of domestic violence goes through, what the shelter offers them, and how their lives can improve.

No matter who your are, what your age, social status, career, or community you live in- at some point you will be touched in some way by domestic violence. This could happen to you, your daughter, son, (not just a woman's crime), neighbor, sister, Mother, etc. and it could change your life forever. Please make sure you come to this meeting and bring a friend, neighbor, relative, etc to learn this useful information. This is not to scare you, it's to make you and your loved ones safe! And as you know, Knowledge is power!

Note:
The program is a lecture-type with a question/answer session at the end, so there is no need to bring anything except your own drink.........However, I asked the shelter if they are in need of clothing and, of course, they said "yes". Remember, many of these women arrive at the shelter with only the clothes on their backs. The shelter helps them with new employment and business clothing to wear to that new job. So- if you could take 5 minutes and go through your closet, and bring in an outfit or two that maybe you no longer wear (new or like-new). I dont know about you, but I have several things in my closet with the tags still on that I have no intention of ever wearing!! This would be helpful to a fellow woman in need. This is not required but of course would be truly appreciated. Any sizes of clothing, shoes, or purses would be useful. Cactus Patchers thanks you in advance for your generosity. Giving to others less fortunate just plain makes you feel good!!

5th Tuesday (7/30/2013)

Don't forget the 5th Tuesday meeting!  We'll be working on our community service quilts.  At the last meeting, we played a game called "Threaders".  This was a dual purpose game in that we had fun AND we got needles threaded and prepped for next Tuesday's meeting.  Check out the 'Community Service'  section for an update on our projects.
