Bad news: Due to health reasons, Cristy Fincher is unable to attend tomorrow night; we all wish her a speedy recovery. 

GOOD NEWS!  Cristy is working with Carlene to reschedule.

Other news: There will be a “how to” program on Tessellations presented by none other than Nancy P (me). For some of you it’s a refresher, but for many of you it’ll be a completely new experience!

For the Tessellation Experience, please bring:

• ·        An old crayon or inexpensive marker (friends can share)
• ·        Clear tape (friends can share)
• ·        Paper scissors (each person should probably have their own pair)
• ·        A small ruler (6”-ish) in case we get far enough to use one

Meeting Tues - October 25, 2016 - Placemats (QAYG and Take Four)

Tuesday night we are making placemats! For some of you these will be a great item to go with the napkins we made last month. As always, you can work on something else. 

Below you will find the basic supply list for placemats. 

In addition you will need:

• Sewing machine
• BSK
• Cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter

QUILT AS-YOU-GO PLACEMATS
Supplies for ONE placemat:	Supplies for FOUR placemats:
One (1) 18 x 21 fat quarter for the back	Four (4) fat quarters for the backs OR one yard of fabric cut into fourths.
Nine (9) assorted prints cut to size 2 ½” by 14”	Thirty-six (36) assorted prints cut to 2 ½” by 14”
1/4 yard binding fabric	1/2 yard binding fabric

TAKE FOUR PLACEMATS Supplies needed: One pattern: “Take Four Placemats Pattern” by Cary Flanagan for Something Sew Fine Quilt Design (available at some local quilt shops)

·       Four (4) coordinating fat quarters (one focus fabric and three coordinates) ·       One yard fabric for the placemat backs ·       One yard of thin quilt batting ·      1/2 yard binding fabric

Meeting - Tues, Sept 27, 2016 - Napkins

Cactus Patchers Friendship Meeting - we will be making half/circle napkins as shown at the last meeting.  (If you don't want to make napkins, bring some handwork and sit-n-yak with us.)

What you'll need:

• 1/2 yard EACH of two (2) coordinating fabrics, which will make four (4) napkins total
• Cutting supplies (I used scissors)
• A sewing machine
• BSK (Basic Sewing Kit)

Optional:

• A point turner 
• A circular ruler (not necessary, but there will be one on hand)
• The pattern calls for freezer paper (not necessary but there will be a roll on hand)
• 2 1/2 to 3 yds of trim (ric rack, lace, etc.)

Barb Janson is coming Saturday September 19th from 9:00 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Tempe Library Pyle Center (655 E. Southern Ave.)

Hands-on class, Impressions Along the Trail, a landscape quilt class for beginners.

Space is limited to 12.

Cost is $15 to be paid at the September 8 meeting.

Learn quick and easy fusible web techniques as you create a small landscape of scenic Arizona from one of Barb’s original compositions. She share her secrets to achieving depth in your work as she helps each student with fabric selection with lots of hands-on attention. You will get supply list when you sign up.

3. Jeans needle for machine
4. 20-30 strips of fabric either 1" or 1 1/2 " x wof (width of fabric)
Remember that it can be scrappy or basically all the same but bring at least
2 different fabrics.

Note: Kits available for $5.50 which include the cording and glue stick or
you are welcome to bring your own

Meeting Tues, Feb 25, 2014 - Stars and Kites - Nancy Howell

Don't forget!  We're making the Stars & Kites Blocks presented by Nancy Howell on Feb 11.  We'll be in the Globe Room & following is the supply list:

>Sewing machine with 1/4" foot (or whatever you use to obtain a 1/4" seam)
>Small Rotary Cutting Mat
>Rotary Cutter
>Pencil
>Small Ruler- 6 x 4 is a good size
>Neutral thread - Light/Med Gray; Light/Med Beige, etc.
>One filled bobbin (also in a Neutral)
> and just the basic sewing kit
>There will be a pressing mat on one table with an iron, but an extra iron or 2 would be helpful.

Next Meeting - Tues, Feb 11, 2014 - Nancy Howell Demo - Stars and Kites Quilt

Doors open 6p - business meeting starts 6:30p

February's Program & Friendship Nights will be a combined project. This is a foundation pieced block that can be made anywhere from 5.5" to 7.5" ( possibly 8.5" if so desired).  

Nancy will be supplying all fabric, 6.5" squares and all of the strips of fabric.  

After 4 blocks are completed they are then sewn together to form a Star in the center of the  block.  When 3 more completed Star blocks are put together you get a "secondary design" a Kite, hence the name Stars and Kites.  Once the large quilt blocks are completed, Nancy will sew the "quilt top" and we will get some volunteers to help complete the quilt and donate it to "My Sisters Place".  If you're comfortable with piecing at home, you can take a kit after Nancy's demo.  Otherwise, bring the following to the Friendship Meeting on the 25th of February and everyone complete their blocks at the meeting:


          Sewing machine with 1/4" foot or whatever they use to obtain a 1/4" seam

          Pencil

Next Meeting - Tues, July 23, 2013 - Reverse Applique

An important part to being a successful quilter is to HAVE FUN and continue to LEARN & GROW. So that's what our meeting will be all about! We'll learn a different way to do the technique "Reverse Applique", as taught by Fons & Porter. This will be a hands-on project that is interesting and easy. In addition, we'll play a fun game which involves, what else?.... needles!!!  If you have a fun/easy one-minute quilting tip that you'd like to teach & share your fellow members, feel free to do that during our sewing time.

Please bring:

1. General sewing supplies (scissors, pins, etc.)

2. A piece of batting (10" square or larger)

3. Your own drink

(Everything else will be provided for you by the guild)

Don't Miss This! June 11, 2013 - Grandmother's Flower Garden

Hey all you Cactus Patchers and "future Cactus Patchers" (guests), our next meeting - Tuesday, June 11th - will feature a technique that is as HOT as our Arizona summers!!! 

It is called Hexagons, and specifically the 'Grandmother's Flower Garden' pattern.  It's an easy hand-sewing project that is versatile, fun, and oh so beautiful!!  Everyone is welcome to come and learn this exciting pattern that has been around for centuries, but - as they say, "Everything that's old is NEW again!!!" It was popular in England in the late 1700's, feel free to look it up on the internet under 'English Paper Piecing' and get just as excited as we are!!!  Hope to see you there!
Please bring:

1. Basic hand-sewing supplies
(scissors, pins, needles, black thread)
2. Any finger-food  snack (cookies, candy, cupcake, etc)
3. Any quilted item that you may have which uses English Paper Piecing

Note: Drinks and everything else needed will be provided

No Shirt Sherlock - February 12, 2013

Join us at the next meeting of the Cactus Patchers, at the Pyle center for an evening with that quilt slueth, Sherlock Half-Square. 

Sherlock has some clues for you if you'd like to help  solve the "No Shirt" mystery. They involve some shopping, try the local goodwill, salvation army,hubby's closet.... 

Seek out 7 men's shirts, preferably x-large to max out the fabric available. You'll need to find 2 light, and 5 darks. Sherlock warns that this may not be easy, as men are know for wearing really boring colors and patterns, :). Your shirts should be 100% cotton, and similar weight. Ensure the fabric isn’t too worn, and has good body. It should feel like good quilting cotton. Wash (if needed) and iron the shirts with starch or best press.  

You'll need to bring shirts and:

* Good sharp scissors
* Rotary cutter with a NEW blade* Basket for holding scraps you’ll deal with later* Long ruler – 6.5” x 24.5”
* Small ruler – 6.5” x 6.5”
* Cutting mat

Sherlock will guide you in turning the shirts into a nice throw size quilt. Tuesday night, we'll be cutting up, and instructions for sewing will follow here on our blogspot.
